Perfecting the IELTS speaking task isn’t easy but we have a few tips today that will help you jump a band score, but only if you practice over and over again.
The first step is to make sure you don’t make these common mistakes:
Grammatical and syntactical mistakes i.e. using wrong tenses, using wrong word forms, using plurals instead of singulars and vice-versa etc.
Speaking too fast to the point where everything is incoherent
Speaking too slow to the point where we can’t be sure of your fluency
Aside from the list above, you should also know the extra qualities that IELTS examiners look for. We’ll give you a few overview!
1. Expanding on seemingly simple questions
Questions like, “Tell me about your hometown,” or “Do you want to be an artist?” require more than simple two or three words responses such as, “It’s hot and crowded,” or “Yes, I do.” The IELTS test purposely gives you these questions to see if you can expand your ideas and show you have a strong control of the English language. So practice coming up with as much detail as possible but be careful not to over do it.
2. Stay focused and on topic
One of the biggest mistakes many candidates make is going off track. When you completely miss the target it reflects that you didn’t understand the question which in turn reflects you have a low listening or comprehension ability. So remember, stay on the topic to ensure a high score.
3. Stay calm
This is a cliche but its important that you practice being comfortable speaking in front of others so intangible factors such as nervousness do not interfere with your score. The more nervous you are the more mistakes you will make. We’ll dish you some insider tips to help you out, for example, the IELTS does not scare if you maintain eye contact or not, so if looking someone in the eye makes you scared then don’t even sweat it! They also don’t care whether you are boring or not, so you don’t need to worry about being personable here. Just remind yourself you gotta show off your language abilities, nothing else matters.
